Cultivating Habits & Critical Thought
HCS Invests in Individuals Series – Mrs. Deborah Delaney, Student Support Specialist
Ninth grade is a pivotal year in education. At this grade, many key decisions are made and future paths defined. The skills, habits, and experiences students have acquired by this time affect the future opportunities they will have. We don’t know which path student will choose in the early years of their education, so our goal remains the same for all: do everything we can to ensure that all the doors are open for them in high school and beyond!

As personal choice and study habits directly impact student success, Highland Christian School’s Administrative Team included two electives, Choices and Study Skills, to provide time, attention, and intentional input in these areas of student development. Highly personal and interactive, these classes are taught by the one and only, Mrs. Deborah Delaney!
In STUDY SKILLS, Mrs. Delaney creates techniques using games and other materials to help students with time management, note-taking, organization, memorization, critical thinking and retention. “I believe if I can make learning and studying fun, students will be less apprehensive to engage in these disciplines.”
In CHOICES, she engages students with real-life situations involving peer pressure, ethical dilemmas, or social situations with a biblical worldview perspective. Students learn to weigh the pros/cons of their decisions through the Word of God before they act and communicate. Students also learn that factors such as friendships, social media, family, etc. can play a significant role in the choices that they make. They are encouraged to choose friends wisely and filter everything through the instructional grid God gave us in the Bible.
Here’s what students had to say about how they’re benefiting from their interactions in these classes:
