4/K Lunches Build Relationships, Build Trust
HCS Invests in Individuals Series – Mrs. Krooswyk & Mrs. Vander Meyden
Encouragement plays a significant role in student engagement and learning. Knowing this to be true, a few years back, we invited parents and staff to write notes to students during Parent Teacher Conferences, encouraging them to continue their great work into the second quarter.

Concerned that no student be excluded or overlooked, Mrs. April VanderMeyden, our School Security Officer, participated in this initiative to encourage & recognize students. When the student who received her note read it, they were curious. “Who is Mrs. V?” they asked. Keen to recognize an important opportunity, Mrs Krooswyk invited Mrs. VanderMeyden to have lunch with her class the following week. During that first lunch, Mrs. VanderMeyden explained her role at HCS, answered questions about security procedures, and got to know the students.
This simple moment of curiosity became the starting point for what would grow into regular lunches with her 4th grade class. Now a meaningful tradition, these lunches have had a positive and lasting impact on our students.
Relationships that developed over hot lunch trays have become a highlight and opportunity for students to be seen and heard for the unique individuals they are.
These lunches have strengthened communication and trust within her classroom community. Mrs. Krooswyk specifically noted that “When situations arise that require support or guidance, students in my 4th grade homeroom are much more willing to speak openly and work collaboratively with Mrs. VanderMeyden. Through these consistent interactions, a foundation of trust, honesty, and mutual respect has been developed.”

Overall, what began as a simple act of kindness—ensuring every student received a note—has grown into an important opportunity to foster relationships, build trust, and create a stronger sense of safety and community for our students.

“Lunch is a great opportunity for meaningful engagement. Students share their personal wins, like an improved score in Rocket Math or an upcoming cheer competition or conversations unfold about video games, favorite subjects, or family vacations. In these conversations I can recognize and celebrate their individuality. When students share heavier things with the weekly small group, like the death of a family pet or an injury that affects their sports season, there is an even greater space available to speak truth into their experiences.”
Mrs. Vander Meyden
The first group of students Mrs. VanderMeyden met with are now in 6th grade and she often thinks about the different ways God has worked through that simple, initial act of breaking bread. She cherishes the opportunity to see, know, and encourage students. As the school year starts ramping up before coming to a close, Mrs. V is thinking about the kids in our current 4th grade class. “I can’t think of a better group than this! This class is especially unique and talented. They are so full of vibrant personalities. I am going to miss them when they move onto 5th grade. But I’m grateful for our time shared together.”
Thanks Mrs. Krooswyk and Mrs. Vander Meyden for making these moments happen!

P.S. Mrs. Vander Meyden always says that the encouragement students provide her far outweighs any potential benefit the students may receive! “These kids have provided encouragement to me on hard days. Their bright greetings of “HI MRS. V!” from across the playground or at the front door in the morning makes my day. Their homemade cards and coloring pages remind me of my purpose here at HCS.” So thanks, 4th Grade Pack! You are true iron sharpeners.
