SCHOOL NEWS

The Highland Christian School Annual Society Meeting is next Monday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the school gym.  On the agenda will be the approval of four school board members: Holly Haitsma, Serita Jackson, John Piersma, and Howie Ridder and the approval of the 2023/2024 Budget and the Constitutional Change.  The Society Meeting Agenda is available at www.highlandchristian.org and printed copies of the agenda and absentee ballots are available in the school office.

Please join us for a retirement open house to celebrate Shirleen Brown’s 45 years of service to Highland Christian School: Saturday, May 20 from 1-4 p.m. in the HCS gym, light refreshments will be served. In lieu of gifts please consider making a donation to Highland Christian for a gaga ball pit, outdoor Buddy Bench and other playground improvements.

Everyone is welcome to the Young Authors Reception:  There is a special reception for ALL students (not just those attending the Young Authors Festival) and their families on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College.  Enjoy a performance by Trinity’s improvisational group, enjoy refreshments, and hear guest author (and HCS alumnus!) Laura Martin speak about her books.  Trinity will give all children who attend a free Scholastic book! Find out more about Laura Martin at www.lauramartinbooks.com.

Young Authors Day Speakers Eric and Meredith Schrotenboer: On Wednesday, April 26, we welcome authors Eric and Meredith Schrotenboer to HCS! They will be giving a presentation about life as an author to our K-5 students. Eric and Meredith Schrotenboer create resources for children and families that teach about the historical, geographical, and cultural context of the Bible. Lost and Found: Parents, please stop in and check out the lost and found which is located in the foyer by the gym.  We are running out of room and there are many nice coats and items that might be one of your child’s.  Items will soon be given to etc…thrift store.

Homemade vanilla is for sale in the office – $2.00 for an 8 oz. bottle. If you have any empty 8, 10, or 12 oz. glass bottles, please send them to the office so more vanilla can be made. Thanks!

Last year HCS honored and thanked the Highland Police Dept. for their service. This year we would like to thank the Lansing Police Dept. for all they do to keep us safe. We will be collecting money to purchase something they need at the station. Monetary gifts will be collected in your child’s classroom until Friday, May 5.

CHOICE SCHOLARSHIP NEWS FOR 2023/2024

HCS is now accepting applications for IN CHOICE School Scholarships.  You can find details at https://www.in.gov/doe/students/indiana-choice-scholarship-program/  AFTER you have completed your students’ enrollment contract for 23/24, please complete the form at https://forms.gle/RxMqKTDGsvjSqsey8  You will need to provide current proof of address and documentation of all income within your household for 2022.  These are most commonly shown with a state ID/Driver’s License and the first page of your 2022 Federal 1040.  Scholarship applications must be submitted by June 30, 2023 for funds to be applied to your first tuition billing in July.  First time applicants will need to meet with Lisa to complete their application.  Please contact Lisa with any questions or concerns at [email protected] or (219)838-0356 x 168.

PTO NEWS

It’s time to get all your flowers for Mother’s Day! This year Big John’s Farm Market and Greenhouses is donating 15% of your purchase to PTO when you bring in the flyer and mention Highland Christian PTO. The fundraiser starts May 1st and runs until May 27th. More information will be coming home this week! Thank you for your continued support!

Teacher Appreciation Week is next week May 1-5. A flyer will be coming home this week with more information. If you need ideas for gifts, please check out the teacher’s favorite things on the school website under the PTO tab! Let’s show our teachers how much we appreciate their hard work!

ETC NEWS

ETC has 2 part-time positions available for immediate hire!  We are looking for a furniture delivery driver and also a furniture driver’s assistant.  CDL is not required for the driver position but both candidates should be able to lift 30-50 pounds.  Applications may be picked up at the store or through our website etcresale.org.

TRIP NEWS

Kohl’s Gift Card News – Kohl’s gift cards are temporarily unavailable.  When the new Kohl’s gift cards are available to purchase again you will no longer be able to use them to pay on your Kohl’s credit card statement.

TRIP orders are due (paper and online orders) this Thurs., Apr. 27th by 10 a.m.  TRIP will be accepting physical gift card orders on May 11, 18, 25, June 1 and 8.  RaiseRight scrip ordering for an escrip and/or a reload card is available 24/7.

Zandstra’s Greenhouse gift certificates are available to purchase.  Each certificate is $17 and there is a $3 bonus rebate.  You may purchase Zandstra’s by contacting Ann Lynch at [email protected] or by ordering them on the weekly TRIP order.  Please note:  If you order these certificates online or on our weekly paper order form you will not be able to receive your certificates until the Tuesday after you place the order.

Team B (Amy Jellema, Olivia Ridder, Jamie Paul, Karen Christoffels) will be putting the TRIP orders together on Tues., Apr. 25th.  Orders will be ready for pick up in the school office on Tuesday by 2:45 p.m.

Information on the 2023 Purdue Northwest Youth Basketball Summer Camp is available is the HCS office. This camp is for boys and girls ages 7-14.
