SCHOOL NEWS

New Service Opportunity (Saturday Serve): As a part of Highland Christian’s School Improvement Plan, we are working to provide additional opportunities for students and families to serve our local community. While HCS is intentionally increasing ways to serve during the school day, we are starting an initiative where our community will have the opportunity to serve together once a month on a Saturday (Saturday Serve).

The first Saturday Serve will be this Saturday, Sept. 16 at Seberger Park, 2500 West Bell St., Gary, IN 46406 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. HCS is partnering with Beacon Light Church and Flourish Church to help clean up this park. Families are welcome to bring rakes, brooms, weed wackers and other yard supplies. If you plan to attend, please complete the following short sign-up form https://forms.gle/YLNBRWGTMjmR4nLb9

HCS Picture Day is Tuesday, Sept. 26.  Please check next week’s Parent Note for more information.

SNACK DAY is starting up this week for grades 3-8 on WEDNESDAY during lunch time. This is different from last year so we wanted to let everyone know. We will set up three tables near the south entrance: drink table $1.50, snack table $1.00 and candy table $2.00. We wanted to give everyone many choices. Some items will be the same, like pop and Gatorade but the price has gone up, Chips, popcorn and Cheetos will all be offered again. All candy is new this year. The 8th grade class will be staffing the tables and all proceeds from our sale will go to the 8th grade Philadelphia trip. Also, kindergarten – 2nd grade will begin in a few weeks.  They will have an order form with choices with the same ordering process as in years past. If anyone would like to donate a box of snacks to sell, anything would be appreciated. In the event a student forgets to bring money from home, they will have the opportunity to participate the following week. Students will not be able to call home or have money delivered from the office. THANKS for your support of our 8th grade trip. We are really looking forward to going to Philly in May.

Grandparents’ Day is October 13Volunteers are needed to welcome our guests, direct traffic in the hallways, etc.  Many hands make light work.  If you are willing to help from 10:00ish to 1:15, please contact Gail Achterhof at [email protected]  Adults only please.  No younger siblings, thanks.

Junior High Boys Club meets on Friday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Rick Vander Woude at [email protected].

DROP OFF/PICK UP: Thank you to all the parents who utilize the east parking lot when dropping off and picking up their child. This really helps with the length of the car line before and after school. Beginning this week, students should enter school and walk to their classroom by themselves.
