Parent Note – January 23, 2012

SCHOOL NEWS

  1. Important Reminder:  School will dismiss this Friday, Jan. 27 at 1:45 for Records Day.
  2. HIGHLAND CHRISTIAN CHILI SUPPER:  We warmly invite you to join us for our delicious homemade chili, chicken noodle soup, corn bread, baked potatoes and cookie bar buffet on Monday, February 6th in the gymnasium from 5 to 7 pm.  Donations at the door will be graciously accepted towards new athletics uniforms.  We are also asking 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and parents to consider volunteering.  Please check your child’s backpack, a volunteer sheet will be sent home today.  Please return to their homeroom teacher as soon as possible, shifts fill up quickly.
  3. HCS Re-enrollment for 2012-2013:  Current families may re-enroll beginning January 23th, 2012.  The re-enrollment process may be completed on-line or on paper.  One paper copy will be sent home to each family.  Additional paper copies are available in the school office.  After March 30th, Highland Christian School will have OPEN enrollment.  Re-enrollment prior March 30th will ensure that your child has a reserved spot!  K, 2nd and 6th grades are most likely to fill quickly.  A non-refundable re-enrollment fee of $50 per family will be billed to your account, and credited back on your tuition statement in October of 2012 provided the 1st tuition payment is paid by August 15th and the re-enrollment form is received before April 15th , 2012.
  4. HCS is looking for judges for the 5th & 7th Grade Science Fair on Friday, February 10 at Highland Christian.  If you are interested or know of someone who is, please contact Sara Timmer at stimmer@highlandchristian.org.
  5. Pick-up Reminders:   1) Please let the office know if you need an additional NAME SIGN for your car.  2) ARRIVE AT 3:15 PM or later.  3) Please do not ask your children to SNEAK OUT a different door.  4) EXCEPTIONS for unusual situations or needs can be safely made by speaking with the teacher or the administrator.
  6. Stuffers wanted!  We will be stuffing the Foundation Appeal Mailing on Monday, January 30, 9:00 – 11:00.  If you are able to help, please join us in the gymnasium foyer!  We have had a great group in the past and are usually finished within 2 hours.  Please call the office or email Jodi Lineburg (jlineburg@highlandchristian.org) if you can help.
  7. Men’s Prayer Group will meet this Thursday evening at 7:00 in the conference room.  All men are welcome!

ACADEMIC NEWS

Ten Highland Christian School students (3rd-5th) have been nominated to participate in the ‘National Young Scholars Program’ (NYSP).   If chosen, these young scholars will be invited to attend the National Young Scholars Program during the summer.  This program offers several high-quality educational experiences through interactive, hands-on Discovery Strands.  Students who attend select the Discovery Strand according to interest and aptitude.  Congratulations to Simon Molenaar, Julia Oostema, Cate Peerbolte, Olivia DeYoung, Eddie Spoelman, Heidi Bultema, Fletcher Bandstra, Josiah Wildman, Jessica Hanson, and Dylan Vander Woude.

FINE ARTS NEWS

  1. Spring Recital forms for students Grades 5-8 are available outside the music room and on Edline.  This is a recital for vocal or instrumentalists.  Forms are due February 3.
  2. JH Musical rehearsals begin this week.  Schedules are on Edline, available outside the music room, and posted outside the music room.
  3. JH and Beginner Band Practice forms are due to Miss Boekeloo by 3:15 this Wednesday.
  4. Chambers Choir Rehearsal next Tuesday from 3:45-4:30 in the choir room.

E.T.C. NEWS

ETC has a furniture delivery scheduled on Thursday, January 26 @ 6pm.  If you are able to come and help on that evening, it would be greatly appreciated.  If we have enough hands, it should only take about 1/2 hour.  Thanks so much for your help!

T.R.I.P. NEWS

  1. January 27th is the end of the second quarter of TRIP earnings for tuition credit.  All tuition credits earned will be reflected on your February tuition statement.
  2. TRIP orders are due on Thursday, January 26th by 10:00 a.m. 
  3. Congratulations to weekly TRIP $10 Voucher winner Joellen Dykstra.
  4. The TRIP office has a Kmart $50 gift card available for immediate sale.  Contact Ann Lynch at 838-0356, ext. 100 for more information.
  5. TRIP Order Form Changes:  Meijer $50 is now available at 3%; Old Country Buffet/Ryan’s Grill Buffet is no longer available; Harry & David increased to 12%.
  6. Team B (Dawn Pyle, Julie De Young, Kathi Fulton, Barb Vargo) will be putting the TRIP order together on Tuesday, Jan. 24th.  Orders will be ready for pick up at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Adoption Fundraiser Pasta Dinner for the Steve & Dianne Ebbens Family will be held this Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Illiana Christian High School.  Free will donation.
