SCHOOL NEWS

  1. Book Fair – Exciting News! The Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for February 21-24th.  We will have lots of opportunities to volunteer as a book seller. Plan ahead and schedule time to be with your pals and volunteer together!  Let Judy H. Zandstra (in the library) know when you plan to volunteer (shifts are half day from 8:00 am to noon, 11:45 to 3:45 pm and a Friday evening shift during PTO’s Family Fun Night!). Thanks!
  2. Library News:  The Annual Lake County Library Read-A-Thon started last week.  Your child may have brought home a bright green Read-A-Thon permission slip.  That will have all the rules and prize information on it.  The money raised goes to the Lake County Public Library and 1/3 of the money is returned to our school library.  This a voluntary program.  The prizes will be handed out during the Student Recognition Assembly in May.  Happy reading!!
  3. National History Day Club will meet this evening from 5:30-7:00 in the library.
  4. HCS is looking for judges for the 5th & 7th Grade Science Fair on Friday, February 10 at Highland Christian.  If you are interested or know of someone who is, please contact Sara Timmer at stimmer@highlandchristian.org.
  5. Kindergarten 2012-2013:  The HCS Board has decided to discontinue half-day kindergarten.  For the 2012-2013 school year HCS will offer 3-day and 5-day kindergarten options.  In addition, the 3-day program is planned for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  If you have questions or concerns about this please contact Deborah Benson by phone or email at dbenson@highlandchristian.org
  6. Please send in any Campbell’s UPCs that you have collected before this Friday, January 20th.  We will be collecting them on Friday.  Please remember that you only have to send in the UPC from the package.  Thank you for your support of this program.
  7. Pizza Hot Lunch Schedule: Jan. 18 – Julie Kieft, Leticia Benitez,  Jan. 25 – Tricia Derks, Donna Meter,  Feb. 1 – Ali Buder, Tina Hoeksema
  8. Tax Information:  Private school/home school deduction 626.  Eligible expenditures include:  tuition fees, computer software, textbooks, workbooks, curricula, school supplies, and other materials used primarily for academic instruction or tutoring.  Deduction is $1000/yr/child attending private or home school.  When filling out the tax return, you will need Highland Christian School identifying number:  K141.

ACADEMIC NEWS

P.T.O. NEWS

Enjoy a break from a dull winter day and dine at Red Robin this Wednesday evening.  HCS will receive proceeds from all sales.

FINE ARTS NEWS

  1. Chambers Choir will be meeting today, Jan. 17, from 3:45-4:30 in the music room.  Please note that we will not be singing at Cottage Grove on Jan. 29.
  2. ISSMA information for those participating was sent home on Thursday, Jan. 12.  Please note that wind, percussion, and string ISSMA is Feb. 11 at Crown Point High School and that vocal and piano ISSMA is Jan. 28 at Munster High School.
  3. JH Musical parts will be given out to students tomorrow (Wednesday) in choir class.  Along with their part will be the first rehearsal schedule, and the parent job letter indicating your job.
  4. Reminder that all band (JH and Beginner) practice forms are due next Weds., Jan. 25 by 3:15.

ATHLETIC NEWS

Tuesday, Jan. 17

Saturday, Jan. 21

  • 7th Girls DeMotte Basketball Tournament – 9:00 start
  1. Attention 7th grade boys basketball players: Please turn in your clean basketball uniforms to Mr. Van Dyke this week.
  2. Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team for winning the DeMotte tournament on Saturday. This is the third year in a row the Huskies have won the title in DeMotte. The boys played very hard in winning two very close, exciting games and represented Highland Christian well. Congratulations also goes to the entire team for winning the team free throw shooting contest.  Jak Klapak, Jacob Mulderink, Jacob Thompson and Bo Hofstra represented HCS in the individual free throw shooting competition. Congratulations go out to these boys and to Bo Hofstra who won the individual competition as well.  Finally, a big thank you to all the parents, grandparents and siblings who came out and cheered us on to victory!
  3. Illiana Christian High/Junior High Night:  Friday, January 20..  Junior High students are invited to attend the basketball games vs. Riverside-Brookfield on Friday, January 20.  Admission is free for the junior high student. The first 100 6th, 7th & 8th graders will receive a free Illiana Loud Crowd t-shirt.  Children must be accompanied by a parent.  There will be no re-entry.  Shirt distribution will begin at 5 pm.  The first game starts at 5 pm, and the final boys varsity game will begin at 7:30 pm.

T.R.I.P. NEWS

  1.  TRIP orders are due on Thursday, January 19th by 10:00 a.m.
  2. Congratulations to weekly TRIP $10 voucher winner: Trisha Bates.
  3. The TRIP office has a Kmart $50 gift card available for immediate sale.  Contact Ann Lynch at 838-0356, ext. 100 for more information.  This can also be used at Sears and Lands End.
  4. TRIP Order Form Changes:  Six Flags 1-Day Admission Ticket prices have been increased to $35 at 7%.
  5. Team A (Ali Buder, Gigi Eriks, Staci Sytsma, Amy Wilcox) will be putting the TRIP order together today.  Orders will be ready for pick up at 2:45 p.m. today.
